I think that all of us are somewhat unsatisfied with our lives, and that’s okay. We want more. We push ourselves. We strive to be a better version of ourselves. I think part of the reason we do this is to feel better, to avoid what we perceive as negative. But life is always going to be 50/50. Without negative emotions as a contrast, we wouldn’t truly be able to enjoy all the positive things in life.
When you die, you will probably be unsatisfied, as unsatisfied as you are right now. You will be satisfied with some of the things you have done in your life, but unsatisfied with those things that you have yet to achieve and still want to achieve. Because we are constantly trying to become the next version of ourselves, we are never going to feel complete, and that’s okay. That doesn’t mean you’re not happy, that doesn’t mean you don’t love your life, it doesn’t mean you’re not grateful for everything you have.
If we’re all going to die unsatisfied, then I think we should live our lives to the fullest now and enjoy the journey. I think we should stop trying to avoid the half of our lives that is going to be awful or hard, and show up instead and be the best version of ourselves.
So think about it, what do you want to do with your life? What if life is just for the ADVENTURE? What’s important to you? What do you want to create, say, add, change and try? If we are all going to die anyway, what do you want to do in the meantime?
Me, I want to be fun. I want to be loving and inspiring. I want to take risks. I want to live an interesting life. I want to die knowing that I lived!
I know that living overseas provides me so many chances to grow, learn and experience new things. There have been so many beautiful moments just here in Switzerland. For instance I have developed a new passion, hiking. I have hiked on and over glaciers, ridges, forests, gorges, mountains and all with breathtaking views. I have actually been paid at work to spend the day skiing on world renowned slopes. I have had the most romantic wedding anniversary taking several gondolas in the dark up to the top of Mt. Titlis to watch the most spectacular sunrise over the mountain peaks and glaciers, followed by a champagne brunch at the mountaintop lodge complete with yodelers and alp horns.
Before the days of Coronavirus restrictions, my expat life also afforded me amazing travel opportunities, particularly all over Europe. I have had ADVENTURES in almost every famous European city and so many wonderful small places that most people haven’t heard of too.
So yes, I feel unsatisfied still. And yes, 50% of my life overseas has been full of challenges, but I have still enjoyed my ADVENTURE.
What are your plans? How can you enjoy the journey? Think about it. Really think about it. And then write about it. Write it down. Put it on paper. Make it real.
