Parenting a Teenager

My daughter is almost 15 now, so I am still in the beginning stages of parenting a teenager. I am finding it very rewarding and frustrating all at the same time. Since this is where my energies are going at the moment, I thought I would share today some of what I have learned so far as a parent, but also as an international high school educator for over 20 years.

Strategies to Parenting a Teenager:

  1. Remember they are still watching you.
  2. Model vulnerability.
  3. Remember that a tantrum is a tantrum at any age.
  4. Redirect catastrophizing.
  5. Remind them it’s not always about them.
  6. Practice self-regulation.
  7. Teach comfort with uncertainty.
  8. Parent the teenager you have, not the one you wish you had.

I would love to hear some of the concerns and struggles you have with your teens, as well as some of the strategies that you have had successes with so far.

  1. Right here is the perfect site for everyone who wants to find out about this topic. You realize so much its almost hard to argue with you (not that I really will need toÖHaHa). You definitely put a brand new spin on a topic which has been written about for decades. Great stuff, just wonderful!
