In our quest to be our best self and lead an amazing life, we often fall prey to 5 unwritten rules that I will list below. We think we are doing these 5 things to manage our stress and relate to others. But in reality, we are doing these 5 things to appear busy but invulnerable, which ultimately prevents us from developing close connections when we most need them. While these unwritten rules are followed by many, I think it is even more common among expat women and girls, in our effort to look like we are having the perfect life abroad.
For our own well-being, we need to start breaking these 5 rules today:
- Being overwhelmed is the new normal.
- Stress is equated with worthiness and productivity.
- If you’re happy, it must mean you’re not working hard enough.
- Don’t share your good news with friends, family, or peers.
- Don’t burden your friends, family or peers with your own stress because that might stress them out.
I dare you to catch yourself the next time you are about to follow one of these rules, and consciously choose to break them instead. There is no upside to following any of these rules.
